Photography Styles

In photography, there are as many different styles as there are photographers.  But all of these different styles can usually be classified according to a few different categories.  This article may help you get a better idea of what kinds of photography you prefer.  If you make a pinterest board full of images you like, similiar to what I mentioned in my Choosing a Photographer article, this article will be particularly helpful.

Category #1: Posing

There are basically two ends of the spectrum when it comes to posing: highly posed photos (think traditional family portraits and magazine editorial shots) and candid photos (in-the-moment, as things are happening, aka: photojournalistic).  Most photographers can do some of both, but they may have a preference for one over the other.  Whichever end of the spectrum you prefer, make sure your photographer has portfolio images which embody that.

 Examples:

Editorial

Photojournalistic

Traditional

Category #2: Location

This one is simple.  What locations do you prefer for your photos?

There’s as many different options as there are environments, but your pinterest board will likely start pointing to one of these:

Outside in a green area like a field or a park

Outside in town/city streets with lots of buildings around

              Inside a beautiful building

              Inside a home

              Inside a studio

Category #3: Editing

Much of how a photo looks actually comes from the editing.  I’ve put some examples below of different photo editing effects for you to look through and decide which you prefer. Keep in mind that everything in photo editing is a spectrum.  For instance, if you enjoy the dark and intense editing look, but you don’t want your photos as dark as the example below, that can be achieved!

Dark and Intense

Bright and Airy

Vibrant

Desaturated

Warm Tone

Cool Tone
